Disco Harvest Fest
Many churches
offer harvest festivals loaded with "food, fellowship, and fun."
Last year’s Hillbilly Hoedown proved that Lake-church was no exception.
And this year’s Disco Harvest exceeded last year's Hillbilly Hoedown
phenomenally.
The kids thoroughly
enjoyed the huge inflated slide and Jupiter jump. Many of them didn't
want to leave for the ever-popular hamburgers and hot dogs. The
costume
contest didn't lure too many away either. They did trickle into the
area where games earned them candy, but not nearly as quickly as expected.
A petting area
with ponies, burros, and goats also kept the kids entertained. Some grown-ups
probably wished they were small enough to ride the pony
The teenagers
got into the theme with enthusiasm. Many of them came dressed in period
clothing. A group got together and demonstrated their knowledge of disco.
Those watching will never hear "The Hustle" without visualizing
their performance. As one observer put it, "Those Hurd boys got
soul!" John Travolta would have been envious.
A couple of
our adult musicians joined in the fun and did the bump to "Car Wash"
with abandon. Not to be outdone, other adults showed off their dancing
abilities during the costume contest. Even the shy ones were encouraged
to strut their stuff.
The disco theme
did not climate the traditional bonfire and hayride. Sparks from the
bonfire danced upward in the breeze as those tending it added
fuel. The hayride lasted much longer this year and even included a visit
to the "spook" house if you dared.
Thanks to our
wonderful security team the celebration went smoothly from the parking,
to directing the people to the various activities, to watching the bonfire,
to the hayride. Everyone went home safe and happy.
How will Lake-church
top this next year? We’ll just have to wait and see.
